Reposted Greenwood fic: A Christmas Ghost Story (gen, G)
    Title: A Christmas Ghost Story
    Fandom: Here is Greenwood
Pairing: None (as gen as the source)
    Rating: G
    Words: ~3100
    Warnings: None? Manga-style silliness, perhaps.
Summary: Hasukawa, Shun, Shinobu, and Mitsuru have a typical encounter over Christmas at an onsen owned by Shun's family. Well, typical for them, anyway.
Notes: Originally written for [info]fourthage in the Yuletide 2008 fic exchange, first posted here. I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to elsane and farwing for their speedy, brilliant beta work. Thank you both, so much -- this would have made much less sense without you. All remaining mistakes are, of course, my own. Feedback and constructive criticism of all kinds is welcome and cherished!

my luck is occasionally highly, highly amusing
Of the ~110 fandoms I offered (by my tally: 43 books, 38 movies, 10 musicals/plays, 8 comics/graphic novels, 5 myth/fairy tales, 4 television shows, 2 history rpf, 1 manga/anime, 1 game, 1 song), ONE was a manga/anime fandom. Guess which one I ended up getting as my assignment?

The Yuletide story I wrote this year was A Christmas Ghost Story in the Here is Greenwood fandom, for [info]fourthage. I had a supremely good time writing it, not to mention reading the manga and re-watching the anime beforehand. The amusing thing about the title is that it's exactly the sort of title that some of the storylines in the manga have, so in the end I just couldn't resist.

I would also like to formally thank my two wonderful authors, now that I know who they are!

[info]redwireskyline wrote me the two fantastic Brick stories: Sleep/No Sleep and Half-Second. I really do love them, thank you again. ♥

And [info]in_the_blue wrote the awesome Like a New Emotion for the fandom Emma Bull -- War for the Oaks, one of my favorite books of all time. It made me so happy, thank you! :)

Sometimes it feels like you're stealing large chunks of it, but mostly, you've given me a space for creativity and indulgence and happiness. Thank you.

Happy New Year, everyone! May your 2009 be everything you wish it to be.

Yuletide 2008 Batch 1: Chaos, and Hope, and Love
I haven't had much time to read, and the reading I've done has been almost completely random. I've been deliberately avoiding reading any reclists before writing this up, though I'll be going back to those in January, I'm sure. There are several fandoms with many stories that I'm really excited about reading, but somehow haven't yet touched, and I've read very few fandoms in their entirety -- for some of the fandoms represented here, the fic I'm reccing is the only one I've actually read. And in some cases that means it's one of the four fics I betaed. But in any case, of the stories I have read, here are some of the ones I've enjoyed most:

Aliens, Askewniverse, Being Human, The Big Bang Theory, The Breakfast Club, Burn Notice, Chuck, Diana Wynne Jones -- Archer's Goon, Guarding Tess, Heathers, Into the Woods, Lois McMaster Bujold -- Vorkosigan series, Love Actually, The Princess Bride, Maud Hart Lovelace -- Betsy-Tacy stories, Mythology -- Greek and Roman, Psych, RPF -- Misc Actors, Shakespeare -- Romeo and Juliet, and Tanith Lee -- The Silver Metal Lover )

25 recs in 20 fandoms. Not bad, considering! Subject line paraphrased from something Angela says during season 2 of Bones: "We build our lives out of chaos, and hope, and love."

    better off as lovers
Yuletide always makes me feel overwhelmed and incredibly lucky. This year (again!), I received three wonderful stories. The two from my yuletide author (Sleep/No Sleep and Half-Second, probably best read in that order) were both Brick, The Brain/Brendan, and the atmosphere, dialogue, fraught intensity, emotional center, and Brain perspective all really, really worked for me. ♥ The other is a fantastic little War for the Oaks scenelet, Like a New Emotion -- all about healing through music and companionship, featuring Eddi, the Phouka, and Hedge. So much love!

Even better, my recipient seems to have liked my story, which is always a huge relief. It's totally possible no one else will read it, but you know, I don't mind. Though if you happen to guess it before the reveal (and didn't already know of it), I will be happy to write you a prompt ficlet in any fandom I'm even moderately familiar with.

I have a million yuletide story tabs open, and I have no idea how many I'm going to get to before the reveal, but hopefully I'm manage at least a small rec post... We'll see!

    The Mysterious Mannequin
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever heard of a fic challenge based around Nancy Drew mysteries? The classic ones, 30s-70s. I recently found the bunch that I had while growing up, and the blurbs make me think that it could actually be really fun, like the romance novel challenges only with mysteries. It think it might work for many casefile-ish fandoms, though of the fandoms I'm most familiar with, Psych and Veronica Mars would probably make the most sense. But multifandom might be the way to go.

    Just a stray thought.

In other news, I just stayed up all night peering into the yuletide irc room and betaing one fic. Well, and poking at the internet a little. It was fun. I think this means I'm pretty unlikely to write any of the stocking stuffers I've been contemplating, though.

My story is in. My betas did an amazing job. I am so relieved. I'm sad that I have to go write my research paper instead of hanging out on the irc channel offering to beta pinch-hits, but hey, can't have everything. This is enough.

Stray plot bunnies and ficwritingish thoughts:

    1. I should remember to take a copy of The Obnoxious Jerks with me on vacation. I'm pretty sure it could make for a seriously adorable bandom AU.

    2. I am also pretty sure it is now my responsibility to write a love letter to my time at Stanford in the form of a Chuck/Bryce pre-series story. (Did I mention that I enjoyed the first disc of Chuck a whole lot? Because I really, really did.)

    3. Having an epic college AU work-in-progress is kind of insane-ifying. Also having another WIPish thing in tandem with it, no matter how casual.

    4. Recently I've been wanting to go back to the SPN fics I was working on, but who knows if that's ever actually going to happen.

    5. My yuletide status is totally OH SHIT BEARS and will be until I get enough schoolwork done that I can actually work on it, gah.

Speaking of, back to work! *flail*

Oh, holy shit. Banlieue 13 is the hottest movie in the world. The two leads are both insanely hot just standing still, but when you slot in the fact that they themselves did all the stunts, including some of the most sleek, gorgeous parkour imaginable... Just, holy mary mother of god. Produced and co-written by Luc Besson and directed by a cinematographer, so it looks gorgeous from that perspective as well. The plot is basically your standard dystopian near-future action flick, but it's well put together and moves super fast, and the dialogue works, at least as far as I can tell with my high school French and the subtitles. And I desperately, desperately want the soundtrack. Basically, this movie is awesome, and an absolute must-see for anyone who likes action movies. And I finally get to read that one B13 fic I know exists... I wonder if there are more. It's got 2 requests and 9 offers for Yuletide, so I can at least hope, right?

Incidentally, the making-of feature could be fodder for any amount of RPS. (The director? Also pretty hot with his crazy sticking up dark hair and rectangular glasses, I gotta say.) And they all seem to totally adore each other. The guy who plays the antagonist was also a co-writer and seems quite jolly and fun, the one girl in the film is adorable, the other main antagonist is apparently the sweetest guy in the world, one of the leads was the fight choreographer and the other is one of the founders of parkour -- and they didn't know each other beforehand and are now good friends.

Totally worth the 85 minutes plus however long the making-of was, and the two+ weeks I've had it from netflix, too, for that matter. I might just need to get myself a copy...

    potential beta needs
If anyone would be up for betaing a little <1300 words sequel/continuation to this little Bob/Patrick ficlet, please let me know?

There will also eventually be the long bandom college AU (Brendon pov) I've been working on for [info]mini_nano, but that will be forever and ever from now, most likely. But if you're interested in following along, cheerleading, or eventual betaing, that could be quite helpful and I would love to hear from you.

There's also my [info]yuletide fic that will probably need a beta in mid-December, unless I miraculously get it done sooner -- if you might be willing, please contact me? I'll either put details under my yuletide filter or send you email about the fandom and probable story so you can decide whether or not you feel comfortable betaing it (or what type of beta you'd be up for doing).

    a quick political note
So. I have my political beliefs, but after 2000 and 2004, for my own sanity I've been trying to avoid thinking too closely about the elections. I gave money, especially to No on Prop 8 (Obama losing will make me sad, but if Prop 8 passes it will make me homicidal), but until I opened my mail-in ballot this morning I hadn't really thought about all of this in-depth since the primary. And then, as I read [info]synecdochic's (really interesting) prediction on when the election will be called, I found myself crying. The thought that this we could really get this. I just.

    Look.

In 2004 I had just moved to California to start a grad degree. The 2000 election upset and frustrated me, sure. But the 2004 election, the 2004 election made me unbearably sad. There was just one modicum of comfort.

We're not living in Maoist China. This may seem obvious, but. That fall, I was taking a class about the period. After the election, every time I went to class, I thought: even after all this disaster, I am so grateful to be here, now, with my one vote, and with the right to deliberate and discuss and express all manner of opinion regarding it.

I'm going to go turn in my ballot now. If I'm lucky I'll make it out of the polling place before bursting into tears.

ETA: Oh. Oh, wow. I'm not sure I've this proud of one of my elected officials since Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota died. And certainly the first time I've felt this way about a Republican. Jerry Sanders, the mayor of San Diego (a Republican) annoucing his support of gay marriage, explaining his decision not to veto the City Council's decision to support it. I realize this is old news, but I hadn't seen the footage until now. It really is a very affecting, heartfelt speech, and worth watching if you haven't.

because fall is the season for ficwriting, apparently
I've signed up for [info]mini_nanowrimo again, 100 words a day. Last year was wonderful, producing one of my favorites of the stories I've written, Unclassifiable (SPN, Sam/ofc, high school library sex ftw!) and a Remus/Sirius drabble I never got around to posting outside of lock. I should fix that at some point.

This year, I think I'm going to be mostly working on the long-ass bandom college AU I started awhile back (Brendon pov, to include Panic, FOB, and MCR for sure, and quite possibly others, like TAI and Cobra), based on one of my favorite fantasy novels. There might be other stuff sprinkled in there, too, including whatever my [info]yuletide assignment ends up being. To avoid everyone having to read my daily nano posts, and to preserve Yuletide anonymity, I'll be resurrecting my mini-nano and yuletide opt-in filters. Please let me know if you want in!

one of these things is not like the others
So, we get home from [info]marinarusalka's after our usual highlight of the week (dinner and Supernatural (currently with a side of Burn Notice and the game of "let's watch the last 5 minutes of Smallville and try to fathom what we see on the screen" -- this game was more fun when the last five minutes usually included lots of Lex, but hey, Justin Hartley's hot, and I like Lois, and the complete crackity nature of the show makes trying to guess what the heck could possibly be happening pretty darn amusing), hard to beat that), and I have a little time to kill while waiting for a friend to call. So I check lj and read some episode reactions, of course. I tab them all open, start from the far end of the line, read, and click closed.

A small bit of talk about SPN 4x07 here; beware, spoilers )

Anyway, I'm reading all about Supernatural, when suddenly I click away a window and the next one that pops up is my google search from earlier in the day (incidentally, I really like today's banner -- happy Halloween, everyone!), on "China nuclear propaganda film." Sure, I've been having some issues with my grad program (I just wrote "problem" there, ha), but sometimes? I love my life.

Now if only I could find my devil horns...

Drive-by Recs: The Grab Bag Edition, Vol. 1
I am failing to do so much shit right now, it's kind of ridiculously impressive. So here's a shot at cheering myself up by saying nice things about fic. :)

Fact is, despite the bulk of my reading being mostly bandom, I'm still really very multi-fannish, and this is only getting to be more so -- in the past few months I've fallen head over heels for both Burn Notice and Bones, and I'm pretty sure Pushing Daisies'll happen soon. And I read all over the place. So, here's a little scattering of fics that have made me happy in the last few months, from many different fandoms and in no particular order:

recs for Entourage, Psych, FNL, Burn Notice, Iron Man, Alias, Olympics RPS, SPN, DC universe (Teen Titans), Runaways, Dark Angel, Harry Potter, SGA, SG-1 )

Fandoms I wish were on this list, among others: Bones (because I love everyone on that show), House (especially something duckling-centric!), Veronica Mars (though I did re-read the ones I recced here recently, so that sort of counts), Diana Wynna Jones, Heroes (I miss the delicious fic of Season 1), Smallville (it's been forever since I read any Clark/Lex, and I miss Lex so much now that he's not the star of our weekly "last 5 minutes of Smallville" before Supernatural), Pushing Daisies (maybe reading fic would spur me towards actually watching the dvds that are sitting on the shelf downstairs), and, of course, everything [info]yuletide-y. If I survive the next week, I'll definitely be looking forward to [info]yuletide, oh yes.

Oh! And a PSA. If you have ever or would ever like to read any of [info]mistful's amazing Harry Potter fic, you should go here and download the pdf before November 6th. I've not read all of her stuff, but what I have read tends to be awesome, smart, perceptive, fast-moving, and almost impossibly hilarious. Maybe a little cracky at times, but in the brilliant way.

Wow, I'd forgotten how long putting together rec sets takes. But it was fun. Thank you, and goodnight.
